“Push ups are the greatest exercise in the world!” “I love doing planks so much!” “Pushups and Planks are soooooo easy!” All quotes you will never hear me say. Push ups and planks are hard! But, there are ways you can make them more manageable and build your self up to standard push ups and planks!

Push Up Modifications & Growth

Some of the best push modifications that I have found have been from Hybrid Calisthenics. He breaks each modification down and gives you some goals that you can set for yourself before moving on to the next variation.

You might look at some of the variations (like the wall push up) and think that there is no way that is going to actually work your arms. Trust me, if you are as out of shape as I was, those wall pushups can do a number on your arms!

Follow his guidelines as best you can and gradually work your way up. If you can’t do the recommended number of reps, that’s okay! Do as many as you can for each round and gradually increase as you start to build muscle.

You’re not going to be able to go from wall pushup to standard pushup overnight, but keep at it and you’ll start to get comfortable with your form and slowly be able to increase your reps.
